Awards & Honors

State Honor: Knight of the Order of the Flag

In 2020, the Republic of Bulgaria conferred upon Steve Hanke the Knight of the Order of the Flag β€” one of Bulgaria's highest state honors.

The award recognized Hanke's extraordinary contribution to Bulgarian history: as Chief Adviser to President Petar Stoyanov in 1997, he designed and implemented a currency board that ended a devastating hyperinflation running at 242% per month. The stabilization was immediate and complete. Bulgaria's economy was transformed overnight. For his role in this historic achievement, Hanke is known in Bulgaria as the "Father of the Bulgarian Currency Board."

The Order of the Flag is awarded for services of the highest importance to the Republic of Bulgaria. Hanke's knighthood reflects not merely academic distinction but a genuine, verifiable contribution to the welfare of an entire nation.

Honorary Doctorates

Hanke has received honorary doctorates from universities across three continents, recognizing his contributions to economics, monetary policy, and the practical application of economic theory.

Bulgaria accounts for three of Hanke's honorary doctorates β€” from the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (2013), Varna Free University (2015), and D.A. Tsenov Academy of Economics (2018) β€” testament to the transformative impact of his 1997 currency board work.

International Recognition

World Trade Magazine (1998)

In 1998, at the height of the Asian financial crisis β€” during which Hanke was serving as economic adviser to President Suharto of Indonesia β€” World Trade Magazine named him one of the 25 most influential people in the world.

This recognition placed him alongside heads of state, CEOs of multinational corporations, and global financial leaders. For an academic economist, it was an extraordinary distinction β€” a testament to the real-world impact of his advisory work across Argentina, Estonia, Lithuania, Bosnia, Bulgaria, and Indonesia.

Beyond his primary role at Johns Hopkins, Hanke holds distinguished academic appointments at institutions around the world. These are not ceremonial titles β€” they represent active intellectual engagement with institutions that have experienced, firsthand, the impact of his economic prescriptions:
